These were found by a friend while we were on a botanizing excursion last week. What could they be: lion cages for a flea circus? Our best guess is that these are shipping containers for queen bees. Upon arrival, a plug of wax in the tube is gnawed away, and the queen takes up residence in her new hive.
Beautiful little objects, aren't they?

Something to do with queen bees was the first thing that occurred to me too.
